This particular video was shot in an unemployment office in Spain but I imagine most of us know someone who is struggling to find work right now. It’s depressing to want a job, to have a great set of skills to offer an employer . . . and yet, to not have a job because hiring is down.
It’s always good to show kindness to others but I found this video especially touching. Did an impromptu performance of “Here Comes the Sun” magically create jobs for all of those people waiting in line? No — but it did make many of them smile, for a few minutes that day. As individuals, we may feel like there’s nothing we can do to help strangers out in tough times, but there is. We don’t have to organize flash mobs — which is good because my singing ability is much more akin to Phoebe Buffay than to Adele — the only smiles my singing prompts are smiles of relief when I stop. We can slow down a bit though, look each other in the eye, and smile. Little things mean a lot.
