With the sunlight coming a little earlier each morning and the daffodils peeking out in the garden underneath the grape arbor I feel there is reason to kick up my heels and mark the season with some special to-do. Let’s not be coy, though, I’m always looking for some reason to kick up my heels, etc. I mean, I’m the guy who has instituted the unofficial festival season, The Feast Days of Jerk and Jane, to honor the 37 days of the year in which my wife and I are the same age. I also once helped throw my sister an “Un-Birthday Party” because she’s pretty great and it wasn’t her birthday, but she’s pretty great and deserved a party anyway. Unfortunately, I do not believe we had “Un-Birthday Cake” at that party. (Meatloaf iced with mashed potatoes for those of you who don’t know.) Fortunately, “Un-Birthday Parties” can be thrown and “Un-Birthday Cakes” made whenever and wherever you choose, as long as you’ve got two pounds of ground chuck, three stalks of celery, bread crumbs, and a couple pounds of potatoes.
So, reasons to celebrate this week, other than the obvious reason concerning the daffodils and early morning sunlight. Here’s the short list.
— If you’re into Hobbits, yesterday March 25th, Tolkien Reading Day, marked the Fall of Sauron and the last days of the Third Age. You may feel as if you’ve already sort of missed the boat on this one, but not really. I hear the original celebration lasted something like a month and nobody’s going to split hairs about punctuality on an occasion such as this. (Besides, isn’t lateness supposed to ‘fashionable.’)
— If you’re into 20th century playwrights, Tennessee Williams’ birthday is today, March 26th. Now, I’ve read The Glass Menagerie, but I’ve yet to get into A Streetcar Named Desire. Perhaps today is the day the balance tips towards me taking that plunge. I mean, if reading it is too laborious, there’s always the film. Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh? Where are my excuses now?
— And there’s always the ‘”Un-Birthday Party.” Got a loved one you want to celebrate? Got a meal that is as of yet unplanned? Got a guest list you’ve been thinking over? My weekend’s wide open. Just sayin’.
