I don’t think there’s any doubt that Lord Byron was THE Bad Boy of his time. Described by one of his lovers as “mad, bad and dangerous to know”, his private life was scandalous and I daresay he could out-Kardashian the Kardashians, even with Kanye West joining the fold. Handsome, passionate, talented, rebellious, melancholy, and haunted, he is the model for the Romantic hero. The notoriety of his escapades is surpassed only by his emotionally stirring, simply gorgeous writing. Works like Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage, The Corsair, and Manfred often sold out within days of publication. “Don Juan” is considered one of the great long poems, alongside Milton’s “Paradise Lost“.
It’s been a long winter — now that warmer weather seems to have arrived, I’m sure I’m not the only one enjoying some gentle evenings on the patio. As you’re relaxing with the beverage of your choice, why not treat yourself to some poetry as well?
