In looking at a calendar of May events, I knew immediately what Towel Day had to be. Any Douglas Adams fan would know. A towel, after all, is “about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.” Don’t leave home without one if you’re going to be planet hopping. Always keep it with you, because there are towel thieves out there. Towel Day began as a tribute to the late author Adams, after his death in 2001. It is celebrated throughout the universe.
If you haven’t had the pleasure of reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, you might take Towel Day as an opportunity to start reading it. ACPL has the guide in nearly any format you like: book, sound recording, e-book, television series and of course, the movie. I don’t think we have recordings of the radio show, which began in 1978, but I could be wrong. So read, listen, watch, play the video game, enjoy The Hitchhiker’s Guide any way you like on May 25th (and any other day). Just don’t forget your towel!
