Unpretentious, happily not overwrought, with a certain imaginative quality to their lyrics, Hurray for the Riff Raff’s 2014 release, Small Town Heroes, made quite a deep and positive impression on me. Their deliberate, mid-tempo, generally less-is-more commitment to an Americana aesthetic definitely takes them much farther with me as the listening audience, but I also think it takes them much farther down the path of musicality. Here we are presented with an album (though more diverse than I may make it sound) where we are not overwhelmed with emotive, sentimental, super-produced groupings of climbing chords, but are made to keep our feet or at least our toes on the ground and to contemplate the elusive simplicity of acoustic instruments in harmony.
Suggested Use: Heading south soon? Bring this one along. I’ve already added this to my packing list for my trip to Bourbon Country. There’s nothing quite as important to a road trip as the soundtrack.
