A few weeks ago I acquired a used XBOX 360. I was (and am) so excited. I’ve been postponing getting into, what is for me, the next generation of console games (up till now I’ve only had a GameCube, remember those?) due to time constraints and fundage, etc. Finally, though, the gaming itch became too great, (I’ve played everything I wanted to play on my GameCube and Angry Birds on my tablet just wasn’t doing it anymore) and I just knew I had to have me some Dark Souls II, some Lego Hobbit, and eventually some Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Now, for a lot of you, the XBOX 360 is “old”, but for a guy who’s pretty comfortable being behind the times, it’s brand new … and cheap … er, inexpensive. And there are still games being made for the console, or at least being made available on the console (many of which are available at your local library!). One of those games is Dark Souls 2, which is, let me tell you, quite a game, in fact…
I’m beginning to think Dark Souls 2 is the game I’ve been looking for. Swords and sorcery, detailed character building, and some good old fine-motor-skills-hack-and-slash action. I mean I like the idea of the traditional turn-based Role-Playing-Game (any Final Fantasy fans out there?!), but really I’m a Mario/Sonic kind of person who needs to get in there with a boss and figure out the timing and the opportunities for a damaging physical strike. Scrolling through menus and waiting for face-off situations to load has grown tedious for me.
I do admit Dark Souls II is a game that stresses me out a bit. Descending into bleak, rotting dungeons, being attacked from behind without warning, the very real threat of wasting some hard-earned souls can sometimes make my head dizzy, but now that I’ve said that all I want to do is go home and play till dawn. I need that kind of time if I’m to get anywhere. This game is hard, dark, and time-consuming, especially for someone as behind as me. On the other hand, I don’t have to go it alone since I’m so far behind, for those who have lived on the edge and gone on before have left many valuable wikis behind; a little light for a late-coming soul and his newest toy seeking to get out of the dark. What else can I say? We all need a little help from our friends, so, thank you and happy gaming.
