Mysteries take place in different settings and time periods, but solving a mystery (often, but not always, a murder) is the main focus of the plot.
Thrillers take place in all different locations and time periods. The primary focus of the plot revolves around a major threat. Usually there is a time limit in which lives must be saved. These books may include a romantic subplot, but it does not drive the main story.
Suspense takes place in all different settings and time periods. Like mysteries, there is a truth to uncover or a criminal to find, but the why is emphasized as opposed to the who. Romance may be included, but is not the focus.
Romantic Suspense places a heavy emphasis on the development of a romantic relationship as jeopardy, lies, deceit and killers often stalk the hero or heroine. The sensuality and violence varies from book to book depending on the author.

You know sometimes you fall into a reading rut. Sometimes, you find yourself being less then happy over all the new books that you’re reading. Are you bored with the book that’s in your little hands? Do you find yourself asking: “How did this ever get published?” A lot of people who find themselves in a reading rut will change reading genres. I on the other hand pick up an oldie but goodie — a comfort read, shall we say.  Time for a cleansing breath.

To get out of my downward book spiral, I decided to reread 9780060549312_p0_v1_s260x420Something About Emmaline by Elizabeth Boyle from 2005.  My memory is really hazy when it comes to this book. All I remember is the first time I read it, it made me smile — maybe even laugh. I think I always give a higher nod to books that make me laugh. This story has an amusing set-up. Our hero, Alexander Denford, Baron Sedgwick, is tired of marriage-minded people. Everywhere he turns he’s tripping over some nubile girl with wedding bells on her mind. And if she doesn’t have those wedding bell tunes, her mother and even his grandmother have plans to see him wed. What’s a fella to do? Well, he and his drink-too-much buddy Jack come up with a foolproof plan that will stop all of these women from bothering him. He pretends to have a wife, Emmaline. He makes up a story about his sickly wife who can never make an appearance in society — why she’s almost at death’s door. But not completely because he has to keep her alive to keep all the women away. And, it works — or at least he thinks it works. Little does he know that he and Jack were overheard when they were coming up with their grandiose scheme.

Just when Alex is all comfy in his no-women-bothering-me-dream-world, he starts getting bills. Bills from carpenters, drapers, painters and dressmakers. It seems that his fake wife Emmaline is spending his money. It’s not long before he’s off to London to confront the imposter and the fun begins.

This is like a broken record in more ways than one. Suzanne Enoch latest Mad, Bad, and Dangerous in Plaid is the latest inh_enoch the Scandalous Highlanders series. This one is about Rowena, the sister in the MacLawry family. And, as we are told 500 gazillion times in this book she’s a fierce highland lass. The hero of this story is Lachlan MacTier, Viscount Gray, who, by the way, just may be in the running for the Bonehead hero award.

I have enjoyed the other stories in this series and I especially loved Ranulf’s story, A Rogue with a Brogue. That’s a good thing, because let me tell you Ranulf was a big pain in the bahooky this time around. Yes, I know he’s a controlling older brother who has all the responsibilities of his land, brothers, sister, neighbors, clan, wife and sheep on his big brawny shoulders. Yes, he is not the only controlling older brother I’ve ever seen in a Romanceland novel, but usually there is also a gentleness revealed just below the surface in most of those guys, which seemed to be lacking in this presentation of Ranulf. That’s too bad, because it was one of the things that darkened my enjoyment of this book. Though that wasn’t the only thing that caused a shadow here and there.

Let’s start with Rowena. She’s very young. I mean really young and not just chronologically but she’s really, really immature. She has always luved Lachlan, followed him around when they were wee bairns, ye ken. He has totally ignored her. She is like a mosquito buzzing around his head. Well, when she turns seventeen she decides to run off to London, which is actually Ranulf and Charlottes story. Well, now she has turned eighteen and she’s allll grown up and she has men tripping all over her and she is going to return to Scotland to attend her brother’s wedding and she’s going to bring her London friends with her and she’s not going to talk with a Scottish brogue and she’s going to like totally ignore that big oaf Lachlan. Rowena was a real irritating character; she was, like, totally into herself, she was like embarrassed of the sheep. Ehmagawd! Being a highlander was totally uncool. It wasn’t till she was kidnapped that I had any fondness for her, but, by that time I had only a few chapters left.

Then we have Mr. Bonehead – Lachlan. For years and years he ignores Rowena – she is nothing but a big irritate in his manly life and then she shows up with her London friends and bumps on her chest! Now he sees her! She’s got gazongas! She’s a fierce highland lassie! She’s fierce, fierce, fierce and he must hae the wee bonnie lass! He must sneak into her bedroom at night and coerce her into a kiss! He must trip up all the other guys so he will be the only one left. He must navigate around his best friends in the whole world, her brothers, take her innocence and then lie about it. Phew, I’m fair puckled!

I’ve read Suzanne Enoch since the beginning of time and I will always read her books. I love a lot of her stories; if I didn’t I wouldn’t still be reading her. However, every once in a while there is one book that doesn’t live up to the rest of the books in the series and for me Mad, Bad, and Dangerous falls short, ye’ ken?

Time/Place: 1820ish Scotland

Wicked, My Love, by Susanna Ives, was a breath of fresh air. At last, a 9781402283604_p0_v2_s260x420book with humor in it! Before I continue, let me preface all of this by saying comedy/humor/funny is very subjective and what tickles one person’s funny bone will only make another person groan disgustedly. Wicked My Love is the second book in Ms. Ives’ Wicked Little Secret series, and I confess I sort of forgot the first book, although I did read it. So, when I had a laugh-so-hard-I-cried moment in the beginning of this book, I stopped. I was a little afraid that having laughed so hard at the beginning I might run into problems later — so I checked out my review of her other book and then I remembered. I remembered there were a few what I call Jerry Lewis syndrome moments in that book (that is not knowing when to stop), so I crossed my fingers. I have to say that Ms. Ives’ writing has entered a new level. Was it silly? Was it farcical? Was the humor sometimes over the top? Yes, yes and yes, but I smiled alllll the way through the book because not only was there some funny stuff in this book but the characters were more than just something to bounce humor off of. Both Isabella and Randall were well-developed, interesting characters, and that proved a counterbalance to some of the silliness. It was a very enjoyable book.

Isabella and Randall have known each other since they were children, and as children there was a strong animosity between them — they just didn’t get along. Always trying to get the better of each other, always trying to be the one who is right. That doesn’t change much as they grow older; however, now there is sexual tension just below the surface. Isabella is a shy person. She keeps all of her emotions bottled up inside and she believes that at 29 she will never have a fulfilling life. That fulfilling life includes a husband and children. She has a mind that understands finance, and through the encouragement of her aunt Judith she has written a bestselling book. Now this book has made her sort of a folk hero to a lot of women; in fact she has quite a fan base. However, because of her shyness she is not all that eager to meet her fans, and sometimes she is embarrassed with their enthusiasm. She is also a partner in a banking venture and one of her partners is Randall.

Randall, on the other hand, is all about emotions. He is a politician, and he just exudes charm. He comes to Isabella for some help in saving his career, and along the way they team up to find out who is passing fraudulent bonds. However, that plot is only an excuse to get these two together for a fun adventure. Along the way we get to meet a variety of great supporting characters, especially Isabella’s maiden Aunt Judith. Aunt Judith isn’t all that fond of men. She has founded the Mary Wollstonecraft Society Against the Injurious Treatment of Women Whose Rights Have Been Unjustly Usurped by the Tyrannical and Ignorant Regime of the Male Kind. She has educated Isabella in the ways of a woman’s “sacred vessel” and a “man’s dangly parts.” So, Isabella’s outlook on biology is a tad bit slanted — but don’t worry, Randall helps her sort through most of it.

If you want a laugh or two you should pick up Wicked My Love. But, I think you will get more than just a few guffaws. This book has a very delightful couple in Isabella and Randall. Even with all of the chortles there are some emotional depths explored by both Isabella and Randall by the end of this tale. Wicked My Love was a pleasure to read.
