I know, I know, it’s still warm out. But publishing companies want to make sure you have those books you need to get you through those cold winter nights that are just around the corner. Here is the list of upcoming books for the period of September 15 to October 14, 2015. Those are the publishing dates, not the dates they will appear at a library near you.

Mysteries take place in different settings and time periods, but solving a mystery (often, but not always, a murder) is the main focus of the plot.
Thrillers take place in all different locations and time periods. The primary focus of the plot revolves around a major threat. Usually there is a time limit in which lives must be saved. These books may include a romantic subplot, but it does not drive the main story.
Suspense takes place in all different settings and time periods. Like mysteries, there is a truth to uncover or a criminal to find, but the why is emphasized as opposed to the who. Romance may be included, but is not the focus.
Romantic Suspense places a heavy emphasis on the development of a romantic relationship as jeopardy, lies, deceit and killers often stalk the hero or heroine. The sensuality and violence varies from book to book depending on the author.

Pixels replacing pages on the map

Growing up far from Civil War battlefields, my first visualization of them came via a book, a great book, The American Heritage Picture History of the Civil War. Its painted two-page bird’s-eye views — complete with tiny soldiers marching across golden fields and green forests and firing tiny cannons — engrossed my 10-year-old imagination and spurred me toward the many battlefield visits I have taken. It also fueled my lifelong fascination with maps.

This month, as I plan a vacation and work on a hobby project, I am absorbed by maps; some are in books and some are on the Internet. Although each has advantages, I wonder whether in another computer generation map books — despite all their beauty and utility — will become unprofitable. Many online map images still load slowly or are hard to read, but Mapquest, Google Maps and the like are amazingly helpful, while the slickest websites can give you views of old maps that rival the experience of holding the original documents in your hands.

Maps and MapmakersFor instance, we have a book called Maps and Mapmakers of the Civil War that features maps made during that time. It’s a large book, and the images of the maps  are somewhat  readable.

But take a look at this set of old Civil War maps on the Digital Public Library of America website. The DPLA is a large collection of images from libraries, archives and museums across the country. It’s still in its toddlerhood and can be awkward to use, but when you get to this kind of good stuff, it impresses. In the lower right corner is an icon that enlarges the image to your full screen, and you can use your mouse roller to easily zoom in or out. The upshot is that you can comfortably see details that you’d have to put your nose on a paper map to equal.

American Heritage Civil WarI expect map books to be available as long as I’ll want them, but it’s easy to imagine that my grandchildren will never open one as adults. Assuming Internet speeds improve, the color, detail and utility of maps on a tablet or comparable device will just be too good, and too easy to find. (If you think, however, that I’m wrong, I’d be interested in reading why in a comment below.)

By the way, our copy of the old American Heritage book can’t be checked out of the library, but there’s a newer title, which appears to have the same illustrations, that can. It’s called American Heritage: Battle Maps of the Civil War.

discoverysettlem00fils_0010Book Review:  The Discovery, Settlement, and Present State of Kentucke by John Filson.

~Contributed by Jeff, Internet Archive

Written in 1784, this book’s an oldie but a goodie!  While not part of ACPL’s print collection, we digitized it, and it can be read online by clicking the title or the cover image.

The Discovery, Settlement, and Present State of Kentucke  came to us from the University of Pittsburgh’s Darlington Collection.  One of the many fascinating things about this book is that a previously unknown letter written by Daniel Boone was discovered inside this volume when we digitized it!

This book is a fascinating account of Daniel Boone’s adventures, his dealings with the Indians including his capture and his escape, and his impressions of their lifestyle and culture.  Click here to skip ahead to a brief mention of the “Mawmee” Indians.

If you like regional history, this book’s definitely worth a read!  And if you’re interested in an overview of the Internet Archive itself, click here.

Moby-DickSuppose you are a leisurely reader, someone who reads a book over a period of weeks or even months. Your smart phone is a useful device for spur-of-the-moment book reading — ready when you are, where you are. There are hassles, however, with checking out a library ebook multiple times, and you may not want to actually buy it.

There is a third option. I suspect you have a mental list of famous old books you want to read. If they are old enough to be in the public domain (out of copyright), many are freely available for you to read and keep on electronic devices.

The classic Internet source for classic books is Project Gutenberg, but you also can find them in this page from Overdrive, which provides ebooks to the library. On an iPhone, you can get free classics through the Books app. That’s where I downloaded Moby-Dick the other day. My goal is to read it over the course of the new year.

If this concept interests you, go to Public Domain Sherpa, where you will find many links to websites about which books are out of copyright and where to find them. I can’t vouch that all of the sites will work well on a cell phone, but you may want to use some on a laptop or tablet. Have fun!
