Holiday music in the air

If you’re a Christmas music lover, ACPL can help with your holiday listening needs.  From secular to sacred, from classic to contemporary, we have a wide array of Christmas music available in two different formats.   You can borrow CDs from the Main Library or any of our 13 branch locations.  You can also download music from home for free using your ACPL library card and Freegal.  Freegal allows the download of five songs per week, so if you begin now, you can have a great playlist built up by Christmas day.  Different selections are available via the two different formats, so be sure to check both options if you’re having trouble finding your favorite song.  Here are some favorites:

Holiday music is just a click away

Hey, music-lovers!  Did you know that ACPL offers a downloadable music service called freegal?  If you live in Allen County and have a library card in good standing, you can download music with your ACPL card and PIN number.  (If you don’t know what your PIN number is, give us a call at 260-421-1200, ext. 4011.)  You can download up to three songs per week — that’s 156 songs per year!  Choose from hundreds of thousands of songs in over 100 genres of music from the Sony Music Entertainment catalog.  And just in time for the holidays, Kelly Clarkson’s album Wrapped in Red is now available for download.

Songs are downloaded in an MP3 format (compatible with everything), so they can be saved to any computer, mobile device or MP3 player. If you have an iPod, you will need to have a registered copy of iTunes and access to a non-library computer. There are no digital rights management restrictions and no special software required for non-Apple products.  We suggest you choose “Save” or “Save As” and direct it to save to your Music or Downloads folder when you download the songs.

For lovers of all music genres, the onset of warm summer days means that concert season is here.

Or, if you’re like me, it means getting excited about concert season, seeing ticket prices, and deciding that you don’t really need to see that band enough to justify a second mortgage.  Fear not: the library can help you out.  We have the latest CDs from this summer’s headliners, and you won’t have to sell an organ on the black market to get themSo crank up the volume, pull up the “lighter” app on your cell phone, and invite some friends over to your living room mosh-pit, because it’s concert time.

Among the pop/rock tours getting major buzz:

The Black Keys have been steadily gaining recognition over the years, and they kick off their first major headlining tour this month.  Their newest album, El Camino, has earned its staying power by virtue of (1) sounding like the little garage band that could and (2) hailing from Akron, Ohio, making them an actual little garage band that could.
Fun.’s commercial success was a long time coming, and was spurred in part by an actual commercial.  The single We Are Young was featured in an eye-catching Chevy ad, giving them great exposure as they kick off a major summer tour for Some Nights.
Expect  Madonna’s tour to be as over-the-top as the others are restrained.  If her Superbowl halftime show was any indication, concert-goers can expect acrobatics, pyrotechnics, and enough backup dancers to start a small nation.  Whether her newest album, MDNA, can thrive outside of the theatrics is still up for debate.
Early reviews of Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto tour describe the grandiose and the intimate.  There’s generous use of confetti, laser lights, and other visual stunts — as well as stripped down piano performances.
Bruce Springsteen’s latest tour follows on the heels of his Wrecking Ball release.  While The Boss has never struggled to fill seats, this tour promises to be of special interest to long-time fans wondering how the E-Street Band will pay tributes to their late colleague, legendary saxophonist Clarence Clemens. Songs from this album are available to download for free from Freegal.

With so many new albums dropping and new tours beginning, is there any one in particular you’re looking forward to?

The first hand-held MP3 player in the U.S. was sold by Eiger Labs in August, 1998. $250 bought you 32 MB, or roughly enough storage for eight songs — or one copy of November Rain with bytes to spare.  Now the $20 player you can buy at grocery stores can store 1,000+ songs.  And as of this month, you can start filling your personal digital music device — be it MP3 player, cell phone, or computer — with absolutely free music from Freegal.

If you’ve got a library card from ACPL, then you can get up to three free downloads a week from Freegal.  The tracks are yours to keep — forever.  For more information, you can watch the short video below.

For more fun “first facts,” you can check out a copy of Robertson’s Book of Firsts: Who Did What for the First Time.
